NCAA stiffens waiver transfer rules

Following fresh concerns about the handling of athletes switching schools, the NCAA approved several adjustments Wednesday to the guidelines used to determine when waivers can be granted to transfers seeking immediate eligibility to play.

The adjustments approved by the Division I council will require schools requesting a waiver for an incoming transfer to provide more documentation to support the argument - and more detailed verification of an athlete's claims about their original school.

"The overall goal of these adjustments was to provide the membership with as much information and knowledge and education as to what they need to be including in their waiver requests," said Brandy Hataway, NCAA director of academic and membership affairs. "I don't know if I'd say it's extra (information). A lot of it is information that was already being requested in the process. It's just now letting schools know on the front end rather than them submitting their requests and staff going back to them and saying we need x, y, z."

The University of Connecticut Board of Trustees on Wednesday accepted an invitation to move its basketball and most other athletic teams from the American Athletic Conference.

Georgia dismisses key WR Holloman

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) Georgia has dismissed junior receiver Jeremiah Holloman from the football team after university police investigated an allegation that he punched and choked his girlfriend.

The incident occurred in the early morning hours of April 22, 2018, after the G-Day spring game. It was reported to campus police earlier this month, but the woman did not want to pursue criminal charges so the case is inactive.

NCAA, NFL team up on player safety

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) The NFL's top medical experts believe they can take the knowledge of college football physicians and trainers and the research from the NCAA to make football safer - together.

Dr. Allen Sills and Jeff Miller, the NFL's executive vice president for health and safety initiatives, spent Monday and Tuesday in Indianapolis sharing data about their findings on the prevention and treatment of injuries. It's the most formal presentation league executives have had with college officials, and Sills and Miller hope this presentation leads to a broader conversation that includes discussions about lower-body injuries.

The school announced Thursday that the Arizona State head football coach will become a professor of practice at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication.

Ex-Michigan WR Martin transfers to Iowa

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) Former Michigan wide receiver Oliver Martin has transferred to Iowa, his hometown school.

The Hawkeyes announced on Tuesday that Martin, a former four-star recruit from Iowa City West High who originally spurned them for the Wolverines, has joined the program as a redshirt sophomore.
